Web Hosting Scams - What Some Web Hosting Providers Aren't Telling You

Mar 20, 2006 - Linknet Tech News - by Hosting-Review.com

It's hard to separate fact from fiction in advertising, and certainly no less so when dealing with web hosting providers. Bold, broad-sweeping claims are endlessly repeated in a shameless effort to keep you from reading the fine print. In an age where it seems there are almost as many web hosting providers as there are websites to be hosted, competition is fierce, and competing web hosting providers will say almost anything to get you to sign up with them.

That's why you need to know what to look for, how to read between the lines, so that you don't fall victim to any of the most common scams that plague the internet in the guise of once-in-a-lifetime offers you absolutely can't refuse.

Get Inbound Links to Get Your Website Noticed

Mar 19, 2006 - Linknet Internet News - I readily admit that back when I was breaking into online marketing I spent about three months going through the "submission" ritual. But after I learned how search engines actually collect information about web sites I immediately abandoned this practice.

== Link Popularity - Linkpopularity durch professionellen Linkaufbau ==

Here is why getting inbound links is the best way to get indexed:

1. Search engines index pages because they have found them by following a link from an already indexed page. The more links you have pointing to your page, and the more significant those links, the faster your page will get indexed, and the higher its ranking for the relevant keywords will be. Theoretically, to get your site indexed, you only need one inbound link from a site that itself regularly gets spidered.

== Advertise to Targeted Buyers - earn up to 75% of revenues ==

2. "Submitting" your pages to search engines does not remove the necessity to be linked from somewhere. If there are no links pointing to your site, chances are, submission will not help.

3. Once you are indexed, constant submission is not going to help you. Yes, it's true that the major search engines regularly re-crawl sites, but why would they re-crawl your site if there is nothing new for them to find. What will help you is regular updating of your pages and getting more links. As the search engines learn that your pages are worth spidering (because your pages regularly change and contain useful content), they will get crawled more often.

4. When your site is "submitted" to "thousands of search engines and web directories", your email address is also submitted to each of these sites and it immediately gets put on a list of suckers who can be spammed mercilessly. In fact these submission companies will very likely sell your name to other email marketers who will then make your address available to an endless list of spammers.

== Forex and Futures Trades - 95% Winning - 100% Rebate Offer ==

If you want to get your site indexed, you need links pointing at your site. One way is to submit your site to a few website directories or linking services that you know will trigger the search engines to visit your site.

It is not always easy to find sites like this. One sure method is to find a site in your category and have a look at the backlinks that point at the site. Find a few sites that are reported in the backlinks, and then try to get links from those sites.

In spite of the popularity of link exchange programs, this is probably the least effective way to get your site indexed. Many webmasters who engage in link exchange programs try to get a valuable link in exchange for a value-less one. More often than not they will put your link on a relatively useless page.

An easier and much faster, more efficient way is to buy quality links from a service like Linknet Promotions. Yes, it is self-serving to say this, but usually the links you buy from a link service are on decent pages and are much more likely to get the attention of the search engine spiders.

Buying a listing in a unique service like the Linknet "Business Webs" blog will get you in a blog that gets crawled on a regular basis (every day). This blog is also syndicated on more than 35 high quality, already indexed pages. So one link gets multiplied into more than 35.

These links are virtually guaranteed to get you the kind of action you are looking for. I have seen it happen hundreds of times.

Affiliate Programs Explained

More people are discovering the power of affiliate marketing to supplement or even replace their existing income. But there are even more people who would like to have a slice of this exciting world but are unsure exactly what an affiliate program is or what it consists of.

When discussing an affiliate program, it helps to compare it to a traditional networking company where a network of salespeople and distributors are recruited to sell their products to all corners of the globe...

Google de-indexes BMW, lets them back in almost immediately

Feb 9, 2006 - Linknet Internet News - This was a move that has to get even the most loyal Google lovers shaking their heads. Early this week Google "punished" BMW by removing bmw.de from their index because they were using questionable tactics to get traffic. The de-indexing was revealed on Matt Cutts blog on Saturday, Feb 4.

== Linkpopularity durch professionellen Linkaufbau ==

By Tuesday Feb 7, BMW had been sufficiently contrite and the site was let back in.

According to Cutts: "I appreciate BMW’s quick response on removing JavaScript-redirecting pages from BMW properties. The webspam team at Google has been in contact with BMW, and Google has reincluded bmw.de in our index."

How convenient. Google makes a point and impresses the adoring masses. Meanwhile BMW gets a ton of free publicity, is labelled as a good guy after all, and the SEO team takes the blame.

Smells like a pretty obvious PR ploy by Google.

Many Interesting Articles

More than a year ago I set up a number of theme-specific article sites where articles and product announcements in specific categories can be posted. Three of them have been gradually building traffic, and the number of posted articles has been steadily growing.

The busiest is Click-Partners.com with a wide cross section of articles in categories such as Health, Real Estate, Marketing, etc.

Another that is gaining ground is Traffic-Advisor.com where the focus is on Marketing and Search Engine topics, although there is also a broad enough selection of categories to satisfy most people.

The third most popular is Trade Show Tips. This site is quite a bit narrower and focuses on trade show marketing.

Who should post at these sites?

Anybody who wants to gain some exposure for your products or ideas should post articles. It's easy and free.

Using Articles to get traffic and impress the search engines

from Linknet Internet News

Embedding your links in articles is one of the best methods of rapidly increasing your inbound links. Many times a well-written article will show up in hundreds of places on the web. And if it has your link embedded in it, that will obviously increase your inbound links. Webmasters pick up these articles because they want content to enhance the value of their sites.

== Pagerank-Optimierung durch Aufbau von Links ==

Articles will also generate direct traffic because people who read them are already interested in your subject matter, and are therefore more likely to click on your link.

This suggests that the most valuable place to publish your article is in a themed or categorized article resource. For instance, if your product is "health" related, having it published on health-oriented sites will be more valuable than having it published on generic sites.

You can even take this a step further. If your article is about something more specific like mesothelioma advice, then getting it published on sites that focus on "mesothelioma" will get more "reads", and have a greater influence on the search engines.

Second, when embedding your link, try to use anchor text that contains one of your important keywords, not just your URL or web address. Remember that search engines are dumb. One of your objectives is to have them relate your website to specific search terms (keywords or key phrases). And the best way to do that is to use them as your anchor text.

Rick Hendershot is a writer and publisher of Linknet Promotions. The Linknet article publishing service, systematically embeds your links in targeted articles and blog posts. This is an ideal way to build your inbound links in categories such as Marketing, Business, Health, Travel, Real Estate, and Finance.

Canadian Business to spend more on tech in 2006

January 22 - Linknet Product News

Research conducted by IDC reveals Canadian small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) spend about 42 per cent less per worker on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) than their U.S. counterparts.

While there do exist shining examples of Canadian SMBs using ICT to improve operational efficiencies, studies have also shown that these examples are few and far between.

In 2006, technology companies will assume a greater responsibility in educating the SMB market about the importance of investing in ICT to remain competitive. As a result, a responsive SMB sector -- the just under one-million SMBs (one to 20 employees) that account for 86 per cent of Canadian companies Statistics Canada, Business Register, December 2004 -- will see an increase in business efficiencies and market penetration.

Microsoft getting serious about its Adwords competitor

January 14, 2006 - Linknet Internet News

Microsoft is barely in the search engine contextual advertising game, but they are trying hard to change that. The MSFT services-based strategy that lies behind the feature rich new verison of Windows Live (MSN Messenger) depends on advertising dollars, and so far they haven't found a way to crack the Google and Yahoo stranglehold on this market.

With lots of money and patience, Microsoft has spent more than a year developing and testing adCenter, and it will be formally launched in June, 2006. That's when the MS contract with Yahoo runs out.

According to MSFT, adCenter will have "the ability to deliver fine-grained demographic data -- ages, location, interests." Neither Google nor Yahoo can currently make that claim.

By itself, MSN Search does not provide the critical mass for running successful PPC ad campaigns. But that will be offset by the large subscriber base of other MSN services -- in particular Messenger.

What to Look for in a Web Hosting Company

from Linknet Internet News, January 3, 2006

The Basics to look for in a web host

* 24/7 Live Support by e-mail and Live Chat - There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to get quick response from the technical people at your hosting company. Every reputable host has 24/7/365 support by email. Many now have 24/7 Live Chat as well.

* The ability to easily upgrade your hosting plan - As your business grows you may need to upgrade your plan. This should be a simple, transparent process that does not involve any downtime.

* A web-based control panel - You need this to add or modify email accounts, work with databases, change site configuration, and do basic editing of files.

* 24/7 FTP access - You will want to make changes to your site at unpredictable times, so you will need FTP access to the site at all times.

* Web-based e-mail - Your colleagues and employees will want to pick up their email from anywhere, not just their primary computer. Webmail is the easiest way to give that feature.

Google Local integrates maps, local product search

Everybody agrees that local search is going to be very big in the next couple of years. Say you're looking for a place to buy an digital camera in a particular city. Just do a search for "digital camera in MyTown", and Google Local will give you a detailed street map of the area along with stores that carry the product, and locations indicated on the map.

Since products are indexed by keyword, you can search for virtually anything, rather than being restricted to the categories pre-defined by a service like the yellow pages.

Also unlike the yellow pages Google Local includes all stores they have a listing for, not just paying advertisers. Local gives you a map with locations, plus listings with links direct to the stores. The potential for this resource seems awesome.

Plus Google Local has integrated a very slick map utility that arguably looks better (simpler) and in some ways works faster than other services such as MapQuest. For instance, you can search for a relatively obscure place like Carlyle, Saskatchewan or Brora, Scotland and you are taken to a detailed street map for the entire region. If you are looking for a broader overview of the area, you can just grab the map and scroll along a highway or the coast without having to click on navigation arrows as you do with MapQuest.

Google has also integrated its satellite imaging service into Local. If you are looking at a specific map and would rather see a satellite image of the area, just click on "satellite". Or if you would like to see the satellite image with a map overlay, you can see that too, by clicking on "hybrid".

Major TV networks putting more shows online

from Linknet Business News

2005 was the year that major TV networks started to seriously dabble in online TV programming.

In October, ABC began to sell downloads of complete, ad-free episodes of top shows like "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives,". Some think this signals the advent of the long-predicted convergence of TV and online.

Since October, several other networks have made shows available through a joint agreement with iTunes. These include Disney, NBC Universal, Sci Fi Channel, and USA Network.

Now CBS is using online distribution to promote two popular comedies "Two and a Half Men" and "How I Met Your Mother." The network will make two complete episodes of each of the Monday night sitcoms available for one week in a deal with Yahoo! The promotion is called the "CBS Comedy Bowl."

Both half-hour shows, were broadcast earlier in the season, and will be streamed ad-free in Yahoo!'s video player. The video player is available from Yahoo! TV. Yahoo TV features TV listings and show previews and is gradually adding new video content.

"We want to be where the viewers are, and this exclusive partnership with Yahoo! gives us the chance to target an expanded online audience for 'Two and a Half Men' and 'How I Met Your Mother' at a time of the year when many potential viewers are home on vacation and surfing the Internet," Nancy Tellem, president of the CBS Paramount Network Television Entertainment Group, said in a statement.

Previous CBS initiatives included a September effort with Google to stream its "Everybody Hates Chris" premiere. Then in October, CBS made audio podcasts of select shows available on iTunes. These include "Survivor Live", "60 Minutes," "Guiding Light," and "NFL Hot Topic."

Earlier in 2005, AOL launched In2TV, a more aggressive broadband video network that will offer episodes of more than 30 classic TV series. Offerings will be available in January and will carry 15 and 30 second video ads. Promotion of this service was one of the major reasons behind the renewed Google/AOL partnership.

Create a Work at Home Business Plan

Create a Business Plan that includes --

1. Product Description - create a product description in terms of the benefits your product will bring to customers. Phrase it this way

"I help people...make lots of money online." (online marketing)
"I help people...build profitable, fulfilling home businesses." (mentoring)
"I help people...become safe drivers." (traffic school)
etc.

2. Target Market for your product(s)
- Who do you want to reach, and how can you reach them?

3. Sales Goals
- Month by month projections - Where you intend to be each month?

4. Marketing Plan - How you intend to reach your target market?
- Create a small marketing budget and then find someone to help you create an effective marketing strategy.

Now keep your Business Plan handy and refer to it often. It should be the map that guides your business towards eventual success.

Link Exchange Blues

Over the past couple of years I have said some pretty disparaging things about the practice of exchanging links. Not only is it extremely inefficient, but more and more people seem to think that Google has started to penalize sites for having too many reciprocal links.

Still I get hundreds of link exchange requests every week. The vast majority are from relatively new sites with little traffic and little relevance to mine.

Good sites do not waste time exchanging links. There are much better ways to get links.

Google Retake

One of my clients facing the spectre of plummeting Google rankings emailed me today to say "it looks like everything is going back to exactly how it was before the shake up!"

This client was panicking because it looked like her primary keyword was going to move from #4 to about #98 in google searches. She thought for sure whe was going to have to lay people off if this really happened.

Her panic was brought on by the "insider information" contained on Matt Cutt's blog in which he confirmed that the rankings on one obscure Google data center (66.102.9.104) foreshadowed what would be propagated over the entire network in two or three weeks. Two days ago her site was at 98. But now it has mysteriously climbed back up to #9.

Everybody has an opinion about Google. Especially SEO gurus and even Google "insiders". But can we really trust what any of them say?

I don't think so.

Tuesday, November 01, 2005

Google Updates Very Inconsistent

A client pointed out that Matt Cutts blog shares information about upcoming Google updates before they actually hit the main Google indexes. According to Cutts (who is a Google insider and PR guy) one particular Google data center shows the results that are probably going to be dispersed over the entire network within the next couple of weeks. This data center is at 66.102.9.104.

If you want to be depressed, have a look.

Google is in the midst of making changes and in particular is after spammers. The concensus from the comments at the blog address above is that many legitimate sites are being penalized in this exercise. Google is also having a difficult time with "relevance".

In some cases that I have checked, Google's tendency to favour bigger "institutional" sites is even more pronounced than it has been in the past. Of course this is offset by the inclusion of completely irrelevant (or marginally relevant) sites, as well as out and out spammers (corroborated by numerous comments in the post above).

Many webmasters and SEO types are shocked at the way sites, and categories of sites, have dropped from their previously held top ranking. As one very unhappy SEO guy says, if a site drops from high ranking to virtually off the map, what does that say for Google's previous ranking results? Not much.

Too much respect

Personally I think we have much too much respect for Google. If they were the new Microsoft many hard core SEO types would think they have good reason to hate them. But they are not the new Microsoft. Unlike Microsoft Google is a one trick pony. Making all their money off of other people's content and selling ads. This is their only source of revenue -- other than the money poured into the company by money grubbing investors.

What I dislike most about Google is the moralistic tone. Not only are they out to make lots of money, but they are "doing good" at every turn. I doubt they are even aware how hypocritical this is.

True believers rarely are.

More competition required

Google has too large a share of the search market. It is much too easy for them to screw small web entrepreneurs with their constant tinkering and experimentation. This tinkering would not be so bad if the others -- in particular, Yahoo and MSN -- had a larger share of searches. But the last year has actually seen an increase in Google's market share. Not driven by good results as much as by momentum and hype.

This is bad for all of us involved in the web. More of us need to shed the Google habit.

Search Engine Advertising - What Works Best?

In a recent article (Sept 30/05) in WebProNews, Jim Hedger summarizes a number of studies that look at which listings searchers are more likely to click onto: "organic" (free) or paid (ppc/Adwords).

His conclusions boil down to this:

1. Searchers tend to trust organic (free) listings more than paid ones -- one study suggested a ratio of 6:1 in favour of free listings.

2. Being at the top of the search page is extremely important. Positions 1 and 2 get about 2/3 of the clicks; positions 9 and 10 get only about 1/10 of the clicks.

3. Site descriptions that show up in free searches are often what determines which listing gets the click. "Search users are reading before clicking."
